The L.A. Fire(s) is the One
The L.A. fire(s) is the one! It is the seminal event.
They will FINALLY trigger the political will to face our climate catastrophe. First in America and then globally.
We know what to do.
We have and are developing technologies that will help.
We have alternative energy that is cheaper than fossil fuels.
We have had 29 COP conferences held by the U.N. that have been complete failures as nation states cannot solve the climate crisis.
We have yet to muster the consciousness and political will to succeed.
Decades of ever-increasing hurricanes, droughts, floods and fires with multi-billion dollar price tags have not triggered the consciousness and will.
Nightly News is now reporting on what Mother Nature or Planet Earth is doing in response to our assaults on it.
Spaceship Earth is responding to the sixth extinction event that we are causing in the ways it knows how to do:
- unprecedented numbers of tornados
- ever increasing intensity of hurricanes and cyclones
- “once in a 1,000 year floods”
- “once in 500 year droughts”
- the three warmest years in the last 125,000 years
- massive snow events caused by the increased water in the atmosphere due to global warming.
All of these have not yet triggered the political will to mount the necessary effort to successfully meet our climate challenge.
The L.A. fires are the trigger event that will change this situation.
The absolute apocalyptic visions of the largest population county in the country burning to the ground is seared into our lives. L.A. is the home of the most successful content business in history. It knows how to communicate.
America is hopelessly star-struck with celebrities. Dozens of such folks have lost their homes. Hundreds of others are producers and writers and people who work in the film, television and entertainment industries. All of these people are now personally feeling the climate crisis. They will become messengers for the need to finally wake up and face the existential threat everyone in the world faces.
One of the developing messages already is… it doesn’t matter whether you are rich or poor. It doesn’t matter where you live. The climate crisis can touch anyone, at any time.
For the last 10 years I have written and spoken about the developing reality that there will be no place on Earth untouched by what is going on with the climate. There will be no real estate anywhere that will not undergo some unprecedented effect from this planetary force.
In the next few months, I will write about the long-term reality of real estate as an asset class. For now, think about how you would feel if a drought and high winds in your town caused all homes, schools, businesses and government offices to burn to the ground. What would you do? Buy Exxon stock?
The L.A. fires are nothing less than tragic.
Hopefully this tragedy will be remembered as the event that triggered our species to wake up and do what we must.
