Get Busy Building Local Communities to Address Our Climate Crisis
We, at Spaceship Earth, are concerned about the impact of the election on global efforts to manage our climate crisis. Regulations will be removed, and funds will be clawed back. My advice is, don’t waste time and energy bemoaning our situation. Instead, figure out how to take action… especially locally where that action has much more impact.
Don’t give in to the negativity. It will get worse before it gets better. That’s reality. Don’t let it change who you are, what you believe, or how you take action.
Who is Really in Charge?
An oligarchy of billionaires and multinational corporations control our Supreme Court, much of Congress, and the flow of information to the masses via legacy, mainstream and social media. They decide the national conversation, while they continue to amass wealth and power completely unchecked.
We struggle to unite as a nation because they are good at keeping us divided. We are drowning in disinformation because they control the media. They have successfully created imaginary villains for us to fight… each other.
So What Do We Do?
The systemic changes that are needed will not be easy. Navigating through them will require forging a new path. Crew Consciousness can provide that path and purpose. It fits loosely… leaving plenty of room for you to personalize. So adopt crew consciousness by thinking and acting as crew members on Spaceship Earth… instead of passive passengers. Find a new purpose that will keep you motivated, engaged… and optimistic.
There will be bad days. Chase the good days. Negativity will be relentless. Battle it with positivity by focusing on doing what you can.
Build Community
The nature of our climate crisis requires that we work together. Seek people who will join you on your journey. If you haven’t already, find your allies. Look for local groups who are involved in environmental issues. Join them and build new communities… if need be. Things are going to get worse before they get better. So reach out now, including to your neighbors. When the SHTF, you want them to be collaborators, not competitors… friends not enemies.
Focus on positive relationships. Abandon toxicity. Cut back on or cut out the people who drag you down. There are plenty of people in your sphere who are not toxic and have no interest in creating drama. With Thanksgiving coming up in the US, if you have difficult people who will be attending dinner, remember you don’t have to go. Consider volunteering at a food bank. You will meet like-minded people, and you’ll escape your toxic, drunk uncle.
Crew consciousness is a vehicle we can use to create grass roots communities all around Spaceship Earth. They can undertake all kinds of actions. Climate touches everything. No matter what your background, skills, talents, education, interests, experience, etc., there are an infinite number of actions you can take right now, right where you are. For example, everyone can plant fruit trees and vegetable gardens… do that. Community gardens are a great way to produce healthy foods for your family while getting to know your neighbors.
Get busy!
Meanwhile, to lessen the sting a bit, watch this clip from Bill Maher’s Real Time episode a couple of Fridays ago. I don’t always agree with Bill, but he is spot on here with his assessment of our situation as it pertains to climate. He used his closing segment to argue that Kamala’s loss is due in part to her ignoring the environment.
